GTRA Research Briefs

Managing Risk in a World of Shared Information
As cyber threats increase at unprecedented levels, the onus is on government IT leaders to stay ahead of the curve to ensure the security of our data and critical infrastructures. This is made more challenging with the rise in data sharing and new infrastructures such as Cloud, both of which ultimately result in data moving outside of your control. In this GTRA Research Brief, we will look at what is causing this rise in data sharing, what potential threats exist, and share ideas on what you can do to minimize your risk.

Trust: The Foundation of Effective Teams & Good Leadership
As part of our commitment to focus on developing leadership skills in the federal IT community, this GTRA Research Brief will focus on a cultural characteristic we feel is critical to achieve deparment/agency-wide success: Trust. In this Brief, we will discuss why Trust is important and give the reader a list of actions he/she can take immediately to begin to demonstrate their commitment to Trust and ultimately help establish a
culture of Trust in their organization.

Organizational Transformation: A Framework for Assessing and Improving Enterprise Architecture Management (Version 2.0)
Effective use of an enterprise architecture (EA) is a hallmark of successful organizations and an essential means to achieving a desired end: having operations and technology environments that maximize institutional mission performance and outcomes. Among other things, this includes realizing cost savings through consolidation and reuse of shared services and elimination of antiquated and redundant mission operations, enhancing information sharing through data standardization and system integration, and optimizing service delivery through streamlining and normalization of business processes and mission operations.

Criterion Systems Awarded U.S. Navy SeaPort-e Prime Contract
Criterion Systems, a systems integrator providing innovative, technology-enabled business solutions to government agencies, has been awarded a SeaPort Enhanced (SeaPort-e) prime contract. The SeaPort-e contract is an indefinite-delivery / indefinite-quantity (IDIQ) established to facilitate a Navy-wide electronic procurement process.

IT-Harvest - Intelligent Analysis:  The NetWitness Difference
Despite years of investment in preventive security measures such as firewalls, IDS/IPS, and Anti-virus, most enterprises are succumbing to sophisticated targeted attacks. These advanced threats are carefully orchestrated to side step those preventive measures and find the cracks in an organization's defenses to compromise email, take over control of end points and exfiltrate data. The revelation by Google that they suspected China of hacking into their systems using social networks to induce employees to click on malicious links should come as no surprise in light of similar revelations over the past six years. As long as organizations rely on purely preventive technologies, instead of real-time monitoring techniques, they will continue to succumb to advanced threats that target their data, networks, and people.
