October 12, 2010: 60 Minutes - The Future of the Perimeter
Join two pioneers in network security: Nir Zuk and Marcus Ranum, for what promises to be a very lively discussion on the future of the network perimeter. As applications and users move in and out of the enterprise network, what happens to the network perimeter as we know it? Does it go away? Evolve? How should organizations address these changes? Both Marcus and Nir are mainstays of the network security space - both having built and championed multiple successful innovations, products, and companies serving enterprise security professionals. AimPoint Group's Mark Bouchard, CISSP, will moderate this LIVE interactive online debate. Please plan on attending this important event, invite your colleagues, and bring your questions about the future of network security and the enterprise network perimeter.

Telework Exchange and Adobe will host the "Telework Best Practices: Gaining Management Support" complimentary Webcast on Thursday, October 21 from 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. ET.  The Webcast will focus on government agencies' successful tactics for gaining management buy-in and support for an agency-wide telework program.  Agency representatives will discuss collaboration technology to help managers and teleworkers stay connected, key strategies to engage management up front, and training programs tailored to help managers measure results.  For more information and to register, please visitwww.teleworkexchange.com/

Mounting a Security Offensive to Counter Cyber Threats and Enable High Performance
With almost every transaction now conducted over the Internet, organizations become more vulnerable to cyber intrusion. Automated tools have made it easier for hackers to generate attacks, creating a flood of noise that may distract organizations from discovering the most sophisticated attacks in a timely manner. This has become a senior management issue, not just a technical problem. Strong security practices are necessary to both defend the enterprise and enable the enterprise to operate innovative new processes without increasing risk. This paper offers five steps to guide a proactive, high-performance approach to cyber security.

City of Seattle Improves Application Usage Control Policy and Enforcement with Palo Alto Networks
The City of Seattle Information Technology Department acts as a service provider to a federated system of 50-odd departments, and is a juncture point for multiple intergovernmental networks. Tasked with managing the applications, networking infrastructure and backbone that supports 10,000 users, while complying with various regulatory requirements, network security is of paramount importance.

Federal IT Group Call for Members
Hosted through a popular social network LinkedIn, the Federal IT Group serves as a unique online community for a unique blend of professionals. Its members (both from the government and vendor community) come together to share their expertise in technology solutions for federal agencies, exchange ideas, and address common challenges. The discussion topics that generated the most interest over the past few months included the Open Government Initiative, data center productivity, and small business contracting. The group membership has just passed the 800 mark and continues to grow. Among those who joined the group recently are the Deputy CIO of the Federal Trade Commission, the Chair of the National Information Exchange Model (NIEM) Technical Architecture Committee, and the CEO of XaaS, Inc. The Federal IT Group founders are proud of their ongoing partnership with the GTRA and will continuously strive to broaden our joint efforts to foster government-wide collaboration and promote technology innovation. Can I Get A NetWitness? I Once Was Blind, But Now I See (Everything)
Amid a sea of commodification and consolidation of legacy security technologies, there are still a few players focused on innovation and keeping pace with the evolutions of threat actors and other adaptive persistent adversaries. NetWitness is one such company. Although easy to mis-categorize, the network player has developed and matured a powerful network-analysis platform for traffic capture, classification and analysis. With a more comprehensive record of everything that has happened on a network, the possibilities are vast. As a forensics tool, post-incident, a near full record of the network purview can be invaluable. Furthermore, as a detective control, asking the right questions can help to spot stealthy intruders and other risky behaviors well beyond the visual spectrum of legacy mainstream security. When enriched by third-party intelligence feeds, the captured sessions may help enhance the contrast between the benign misuse and electronic espionage. When integrated into ESIMs and other complementary technologies and incident-response processes, the value is further unleashed in the greater context and workflow.

Re-Inventing Network Security
For the last 15 years, port-blocking firewalls have been the cornerstone of network security. It's no secret, however, that modern applications and threats easily circumvent the traditional network firewall - so much so that enterprises have deployed an entire crop of "firewall helpers" to help remedy the situation. But that hasn't really worked. Neither have attempts to bolt application awareness and control onto existing firewall products, or to consolidate firewall helpers with a Unified Threat Management (UTM) device. Applications and threats are still making their way around these so-called solutions, frustrating IT groups that have only managed to incur additional cost and complexity without fixing the problem.

NetWitness Announces Massive Expansion of NetWitness Live
NetWitness Corporation, the world leader in real-time network forensics and next generation network security monitoring, today announced the availability of the latest version of NetWitness Live. The latest in a line of recent innovations from NetWitness, Live provides NetWitness customers with the ability to create unique content profiles containing specific threat feeds, rules, parsers, alerts and reports that have the most impact on their organization.

To Block or Not. Is That the Question?
This White Paper is a practical guide to how to properly deal with Enterprise 2.0 applications (and what they are to begin with)-from getting visibility to how to create and enforce policies that allow for safe enablement. The data used in this paper is based on application and network traffic in over 200 organizations worldwide collected during a 6-months period in 20091.

Palo Alto Networks Selected As Global Entrepreneurial Company of the Year
Palo Alto Networks, the network security company, today announced that it has received the prestigious recognition of Frost & Sullivan's "2010 Global Entrepreneurial Company of the Year Award" for its accomplishments in the firewall market.

Managing Risk in a World of Shared Information
As cyber threats increase at unprecedented levels, the onus is on government IT leaders to stay ahead of the curve to ensure the security of our data and critical infrastructures. This is made more challenging with the rise in data sharing and new infrastructures such as Cloud, both of which ultimately result in data moving outside of your control. In this GTRA Research Brief, we will look at what is causing this rise in data sharing, what potential threats exist, and share ideas on what you can do to minimize your risk.

Trust: The Foundation of Effective Teams & Good Leadership
As part of our commitment to focus on developing leadership skills in the federal IT community, this GTRA Research Brief will focus on a cultural characteristic we feel is critical to achieve deparment/agency-wide success: Trust. In this Brief, we will discuss why Trust is important and give the reader a list of actions he/she can take immediately to begin to demonstrate their commitment to Trust and ultimately help establish a
culture of Trust in their organization.
