GTRA Council Meeting Research Briefs

GTRA Research Brief: The Acceptance of Cloud Computing in the Federal Government Only a few years ago, the term "Cloud Computing" was known only to
the hyper-savvy techies of the world. Today, hardly a week goes by
where technology publications and e-newsletters don't mention the term
and how it is revolutionizing the federal IT landscape. In 2009, GTRA
has seen government executives go from bewilderment to general
acceptance of Cloud as a viable model. In this research brief, we look
at the key factors which have lead to Cloud's acceptance, address the
top concern federal executives have vis-à-vis implementing Cloud
Networks, and take a glimpse into the future to see what government
executives should do next.
GTRA Research Brief: A Tipping Point - The Fight for our Nation's Cyber Security
GTRA believes that the critical role IT plays in the overall machine
we call the Government is often overlooked and undervalued, making it
hard for practitioners to not only do their job but truly get excited
about what they do. At the same time, this lack of 'limelight' also
adversely affects the discussion on the responsibilities and duties
facing IT practitioners as servants of the taxpayer. In this research
brief, GTRA shares its view on why Government IT practitioners deserve
more focus, presents facts it believes show that times are changing
with regard to how IT is viewed in the government, and lists the
responsibilities it feels members of the community must always remember
while performing their day-to-day activities.

Ready. Aim. Fortify.: U.S. Army Deploys Application Security Regimen through Fortify 360 Maintaining training superiority and achieving readiness objectives
required the Army to transform its business practices and information
management processes as part of the overarching "Net-Centric Data
Strategy" of the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD).
As a result, much time and effort has been devoted to TAMIS
development and network "hardening" solutions designed to prevent
attacks against the application.
Having Confidence in Cloud Computing: Addressing Enterprise Security Concerns Although there is growing recognition of cloud computing's
benefits-and an ever stronger business case for achieving high
performance by moving deeper into the cloud-progress is snagged on
concerns about IT security. Enterprise IT leaders now must find the
right balance between the risks and rewards of computing in the cloud.
They can benefit by revisiting well-established IT security and
enterprise risk management practices.
Best Practices for the Implementation of Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) for the U.S. Federal Government and Military The CUI Memorandum standardizes practices around the sharing of CUI
with a goal of improving the sharing of information within the
executive departments of the Federal Government. The Memorandum
specifically adopts, defines, and institutes CUI as the single
designation for all information formerly referred to as SBU in the
Information Sharing Environment (ISE). To meet the Presidential
Directive all departments and agencies must take necessary and
appropriate actions to safeguard sensitive but unclassified information
related to America's homeland security.
New Study Reveals Remote Workforce Challenges During Emergency
A new study by Telework Exchange and Intel,
titled "Mobilizing
Against Pandemic" revealed that 81 percent of government and business IT
decision makers have written business continuity plans. However, the
study finds an inflated IT confidence - both sectors report implementation
challenges and lack assurance that employees could work remotely during an
emergency.
How to Succeed With IT Security Using SCAP Securing the U.S. against cyber attacks has become one of the
nation's top priorities. To achieve this objective, networks, systems,
and the operations teams that support them must vigorously defend
against external attacks. This also rings true for the commercial
sector as more than 70 new vulnerabilities are found each week in
commercial applications - and many more have been exploited without
public recognition in custom applications written by programmers from
individual sites in government, commercial, and private enterprises.
Titus Labs Announces Message Classification 3.1 Titus Labs today announced a new release of its flagship offering,
Titus Labs Message Classification (TMC). The latest version of the TMC
software, version 3.1, delivers the power to label both inbound and
outbound messages as well as classify portions of an email. TMC 3.1
enables users to label incoming mail to enable better records
management. In addition, military organizations can now benefit from
the new capability to classify portions of an email. These new features
help organizations understand the value of what needs to be protected
and to better find, manage and control sensitive data.
Gideon's SecureFusion Automates The Consensus Audit Guidelines Gideon Technologies announces that their flagship solution, SecureFusion,
supports numerous automated security controls of the Consensus Audit
Guidelines (CAG), an effective guide developed with the intent to help
defend the nation's intelligence and information infrastructures.
Developed in a collaborative effort across federal agencies, FBI
cybercrime teams, and forensic experts, the CAG is viewed as a valuable
guide for blocking well-known, high-priority attacks across government
infrastructures.
Top Reasons for Information Labeling Identify the business value of data by tagging emails and documents.
Labels add structure to volumes of unstructured data within large
organizations. Consistent labels based on corporate policy include
metadata to improve email management, prevent inadvertent disclosure,
trigger encryption, and add intelligence to archival.
